Quantum Control Security Bulletin

In response to a recent outbreak of virus attacks on a global scale, and, specifically, ransomware viruses, Component Control is issuing this security bulletin advising that the following actions be taken to ensure the best possible protection against such attacks:

  1. Verify that some form of antivirus software is installed and up to date on all workstations

It may also be a good idea to install an antivirus program on the database server, but take care to make sure and set up an exception so that the Oracle database is never scanned directly while database services are running. This may cause corruption to the Oracle database.

  2. Never perform daily work directly on the database server

This increases the risk of exposure to any virus or malware as a direct result of user action, and should be discouraged.

  3. Enforce password changes and complexity policies for user accounts

This includes all domain user accounts, as well as any local accounts that exist on the database server. Changing passwords for certain local accounts may interfere with certain scheduled tasks, so the scheduled tasks should also be updated with any changed passwords. If you need assistance in identifying or updating these scheduled tasks, please contact Component Control’s Technical Support department at techsupport@componentcontrol.com, or through our website at /support/technical-support.

  4. Verify that database backups are copied offsite regularly

By default, the Quantum Control database is typically backed up nightly and/or weekly. These backups are located directly on the database server, and we strongly advise copying them to a secure location on a regular basis. Remember, the application and database software can always be reinstalled, but your data is the most critical part of the system, so extra care should be taken to ensure its safety. More information about database backups can be found on our website at the following location: http://www.componentcontrol.com/system/comfy/cms/files/files/000/000/585/original/oraclebackups.pdf

  5. Periodically verify the integrity of database backups by restoring them

In some circumstances, viruses have not only corrupted databases, but database backups as well. We highly recommend that database backups be verified periodically by restoring them to a “test” database in order to confirm that they are not compromised.

If you have any questions about any of these items, please do not hesitate to contact us. Security and stability of your Quantum Control system is of paramount importance.
